History
The Republican Party is one of the two main modern political parties in the US the other being the Democratic Party. The Republican Party was founded by anti-slavery activists in 1854 and is referred to as the Grand Old Party because of this. The platform of the Republican Party normally reflects conservatism of Americans in the political spectrum. This is opposed to the more progressive Democrats. The party has the second most registered voters comprising of almost one third of all voters.
Some famous members
Abraham Lincoln was the First Republican president of America. He served as the 16th overall president of the US. This famous republican served from March 1861 to April 1865 when he was assassinated. Lincoln led the US through its biggest internal crisis-civil war. He also led the country through its greatest achievements such as the preservation of the union, ending the slavery, revitalizing the nationalism in the country, liberty, democracy and equal rights. He was raised in a poor family on the western frontier and practically educated himself to become a country lawyer and then Illinois state legislator. He then became a single term member of the house of representatives of the US. He however failed to get elected to the US senate in two attempts. He was a very affectionate husband and father of four children.
Another famous republican is Dick Cheney or Richard Bruce Cheney. He was born in 1941 and served as 46th Vice President of America. This was from 2001 to 2009 under the president George W Bush. He also served as acting president twice when Bush was undergoing medical treatment. Cheney also served as White House Chief of Staff in 1978 and was later elected to the House of Representatives from Wyoming. He got re-elected incredibly five times and eventually became House Minority Whip. He was also secretary of defense under George W Bush and was responsible for overseeing the famous operation Desert Storm.
George W Bush was born in 1946 in Connecticut and served as the 43rd President of America. He was elected twice to the chair and served from 2001 to 2009. He also served as the 46th governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000. His father George H W Bush also served as the 41st president of the US. Shortly after getting re-elected as the President, September 11 2001 terrorist attacks occurred. Bush declared a global war on terrorism as a response and was also responsible for ordering the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. Bush also successfully promoted many policies in health care, economy, social security and education. He signed some revolutionary acts in these fields.
Another Republican called Richard Lugar was a US senator from Indiana. He served as the Indianapolis mayor from 1968 to 1976. He was elected to the US senate in 1976 and then he served as the chairman of the senate committee for foreign relations from 1985 to 1987 and in between 2003 to 2007. His major contribution in senate was towards the dismantling of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons throughout the world. He became the most senior Republican senator in 2009.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in 1947 in Austria and has been a bodybuilder, model, actor, businessman and now a politician. Arnold is serving as the 38th Governor of California. He was first elected as a governor for the Republican Party in 2003. The by-election was held to replace Gray Davis. And he was re-elected in 2006 to be the full time governor of California.
