Theodore Roosevelt also known as “Teddy” was the 26th president of the USA. He was born on October 27th 1958 and died on 6thJanuary in 1919. He was known for his cheerful personality and he was someone who had achieved many things in life. Former president Roosevelt was also cited as a successful leader of the Progressive Movement. He was also a good Republican Party leader and founded the 1912 Progressive Party that was known as “Bull Moose”.
Before he became the president, Theodore Roosevelt held offices at lower levels, in the city then the state as well as at the federal levels. A few of the things that contribute so much in his success of becoming a politician are his interests in many things that lead him to being a naturalist. He is also a successful explorer, a good hunter, a renowned author, and brave soldier.
As a child, the former president came from a rich family. Suffering from asthma, Theodore Roosevelt was sickly as a child and spent most of his days studying at home. In order to give a balance of his weakness physically, Roosevelt chose to have a tough life. As a home-schooled child, he was an active student studying about nature. It was during those days when he was in Harvard University that he started to gain interest in naval affairs.
It was in 1881, a year after he left Harvard, Roosevelt became the youngest member of the New York State Assembly. In 1882, Roosevelt wrote his first book about history called “The Naval War of 1812” and was able to gain a reputation of being a professional and serious historian.
In the Dakotas, Roosevelt had also operated a cattle ranch and after a few years of operation, he headed back to NYC to fight police corruption which made him famous. Roosevelt ran the Department of the Navy and while doing so, the Spanish – American war happened, which urged him to immediately resign from office and he went on to create a small brigade called the Rough Riders in Cuba, which was nominated for the Medal of Honor on the 16th January 2001. He then became the Governor as he came back to New York after the war and within two years he became the Vice President.
When he was 42 he became the president of the United States when the then president William McKinley had been assassinated which was in 1901. This made Roosevelt the youngest president in the history of the United States. During his office as a president, Roosevelt makes an attempt of moving the Republican Party towards Progressivism, an era when social activism and political reform flourished. He also started to promote the conservation movement and the slogan saying “Speak softly and carry a big stick” characterized the policies of Roosevelt.
Other than that, Roosevelt was also the person who managed to finalize the Panama Canal as well as being responsible of ending the Russian-Japanese war. Roosevelt received a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts, and became the first US citizen to achieve this award.
In 1908, Roosevelt refused to be re-elected. The former president Roosevelt then went for a Safari in Africa and toured Europe after he left office. When he came back to the United States, he attempted to remove the Republican nomination from his appointed successor William Taft which was in 1912. However, he failed and went on to form the Bull Moose Party. After election, Roosevelt then went on a South American expedition and unfortunately developed malaria that ruined his health. Roosevelt died when he was 60 years old and scholars today have called him one of the greatest ever presidents of the United States.
